What is IASIS MCN (Micro Current Neurofeedback)?
The IASIS MCN is an FDA registered device whose software uses information derived from EEG (the electrical measurement of brainwaves) to deliver imperceptible but precise electrical impulses to various areas of the brain. This is technically known as LIP-tES (low-intensity pulse-based transcranial electrical stimulation).
These impulses disentrain rigid and dysfunctional patterns of thought, allowing the brain to “reboot,” reorganize, and regulate itself with more appropriate and flexible thought patterns. IASIS MCN thought to accomplish this through the following:
- Stimulating neurogenesis and neuroplasticity (the ability to make new brain cells and new connections)
- Enhancing or modulating existing brain cell function
- Promoting a more balanced autonomic nervous system (more “rest and digest” than “fight, flight or freeze”)
- Enhancing the clearance of toxins from the brain
How can it help me?
The brain is the body’s control center. If it is dysfunctional, “dis”ease occurs—in the mind and the body. Helping the brain to reorganize and regulate itself more efficiently results in:
- Reductions in depression and anxiety
- Increased energy
- Reductions in pain and inflammation
- Improved sleep
- Enhanced focus
- Reductions in impulsivity
- Improved cognition and memory
- Reduction in cravings
How is IASIS MCN (Micro Current Neurofeedback) different from other neurofeedback systems?
In traditional neurofeedback, information from your brainwaves is transmitted to a computer screen. Clients attempt to train their brainwaves by mentally manipulating events on the screen. No signal is transmitted back to the brain. This kind of neurofeedback typically requires 40+ sessions, with a typical session lasting 45 minutes to an hour.
With IASIS MCN, clients don’t do anything other than sit still for a few minutes. A brief, tiny signal transmitted to the brain does all the work. Unlike traditional neurofeedback clients, MCN clients may notice changes immediately or within the first few sessions. Fast action, limited number of sessions, and the ease and simplicity of therapy all distinguish IASIS MCN from traditional neurofeedback.
Is it effective?
The success rate is staggering. Over 85% of clients claim by their own assessment that they experience significant, often dramatic, benefits. The results are enduring.
IASIS is the first neurofeedback system with image-based evidence of success. In 2017, a pilot study evaluating its use in treating post-concussive symptoms (PCS) resulting from mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) was published in the journal, Brain Injury. This study was a joint effort between the University of California at San Diego and the Veteran’s Administration. It used standardized clinical interviews, validated questionnaires, and magnetoencephalography (a technology combining EEG and MRI) to evaluate the response to IASIS treatment of six subjects suffering PCS after mTBI.
Significant improvement was noted in all evaluated parameters in all of the subjects who completed the treatments. One of the subjects was able to quit nicotine use, a benefit he attributed to the treatment. One subject was not diligent in treatment schedule and only completed 30% of his treatments. Despite his non-compliance, he still received benefit evidenced in evaluated parameters.
There are ongoing studies of IASIS MCN in the treatment of traumatic brain injury, depression, dementia, and substance abuse.
How many treatments will I need?
Everybody is different, but 10-20 total sessions is a common number. Some people find benefit from occasional maintenance sessions.
Is it safe?
It is extremely safe. There is no medical condition, age, medication, allergy, etc. that would restrict one from safely using IASIS MCN.
Does it interfere with medications or other treatments?
No. Often after successful therapy, prescription drugs may be reduced or discontinued, with physician approval.
Are there side effects?
In the first few IASIS MCN Micro sessions, a client sometimes experiences temporary fatigue, “lightheadedness” or a feeling of being “revved up.” Mild headaches also occasionally occur. These symptoms are always temporary and typically last a few minutes to a few hours.
