Have you ever been so taken with something–an idea, a person, a product–that you just HAD to talk about it?

That’s how I feel about Scout & Cellar.  I’m going to gush a little.  Or a lot.  Thanks in advance for “listening”!

Last August Jason and I attended a friend’s housewarming party, and a Scout & Cellar consultant was there to sample her clean-crafted wines.  We were both intrigued by the differences between the wines that we occasionally enjoy and Scout & Cellar wines, so we asked a lot of questions. The more we asked, the more impressed we were with the Scout & Cellar offering.  Here’s what we learned:

Scout & Cellar was founded by an attorney-turned-sommelier named Sarah Shadonix (pronounced “Shad-nix”).  She was working with vineyards in Napa on their e-commerce legalities, and fell so in love with wine that she left her successful law practice to become a somm.

A few weeks into her sommelier training Sarah began to experience headaches.  She first consulted with conventionally trained medical professionals, and then with more holistically trained professionals, to get to the bottom of the problem.  What she learned was astounding: the root cause of her headaches was the up-to 300 pesticides and 250 chemical additives which taint almost all mass-produced wine.

Jason and I had NO idea that most wine is so adulterated. We’ve since learned a ton about wine production, and it makes perfect sense that most wines contain a buttload (actually a wine term; look it up) of chemicals.  The short story is that consumer demand for consistency is in conflict with nature.  If I’m a big wine producer with an expensive mortgage on my land, who’s just built a $5MM tasting room, there’s a lot at stake for me if I don’t sell wine.  Lots of wine. I have to give consumers what they expect.  So, if I have a very dry season, or if my grapes have a mold issue, or if the color of my wine isn’t what it was last year, I have no reasonable choice but to turn to chemicals to offset those differences and problems. I can either do that or risk bankruptcy.

And there’s another, more sinister secret about wine.  Winemakers have a strong lobbying group, and have used their collective political power to ensure that there’s no labeling or disclosure requirement for any of the 250 chemical additives that they use.

Wow.  I mean, just wow.  Right?!?!

Jay and I hardly buy anything that we put into or on our bodies without reading the label.  Yet, we were buying organic wine not knowing that it can contain all of these yucky additives.  That’s right: even wines made with organically grown grapes can contain multiple chemical additives to keep them consistent year after year.

When Sarah Shadonix learned the above, she decided to scout and curate wines without synthetic pesticides, without GMO’s, without gluten, without chemical additives, without added sulfites or added sugar.  She was interested in promoting wines from small, boutique vineyards that are vinified by hand, not manufactured in a lab…wines from vines tended by actual people rather than mass produced by industrial agricultural methods. She looked for vinters using sustainable, organic, and/or biodynamic farming methods.

When she found wines that fit the bill, she was like Ronald Reagan with the Russians: trust, but verify.  So, she had–and has–all of Scout & Cellar’s wines tested at an independent lab (in contrast to the potentially bogus, self-policing in-house labs that others employ).

Jason and I liked what we were hearing.

Of course, when we know better, we do better.  So, Jay and I knew that we would be Scout & Cellar customers.  And we knew that we would want to spread the word about Scout & Cellar wines to our wellness-minded peeps.

What we didn’t anticipate was that we would be selling these wines ourselves.

But the opportunity to do so was just irresistible to us for a number of reasons. Here they are:

  • First and foremost, these wines are very enjoyable AND they fit within our healthy lifestyle. (I eat a mostly-ketogenic diet, and Scout & Cellar’s wines don’t have enough residual sugar to kick me out of ketosis.)
  • I’ve been a Young Living consultant since the company was very young, literally (badump-bum!), and I’ve always felt a twinge of regret that I didn’t take advantage of the ground-floor opportunity to make a business out of it. That ship has sailed, so I’ll let the other three million Young Living consultants make a go of it while I build a business as one of the first 3000 Scout & Cellar consultants.  That’s right: Scout & Cellar is just a year old and  I am on the ground floor.
  • My upline is made of brilliant, professional (mostly) women with some seriously impressive credentials.  The consultant immediately above me is a masters-level counselor with loads of experience training and leading a team.  She totally rocks, and is in it for the long haul.  So, I’ll have the support that I need to provide my customers with stellar service (and the consultants that I take on with everything that they need for success).
  • I’ll be a part of a like-minded community.  Many of the early adopters like me are wellness women.  They grow food in their back yards and own Berkey water filters.  These are my people.  This is my tribe.
  • I’m making money promoting a product that I’m passionate about.  Yay, me!
  • If Jason gets a wild hair and wants to practice medicine halfway across the world, I can simply pack up my computer and my wine glasses and can run my business from wherever we land. Likewise, I can sponsor and mentor consultants who live in other cities and states.
  • I get to learn all about wine!  I get to throw wine-tasting parties and educate people about clean-crafted wines while they revel in general merriment!  How fun is that?!?

I’m hoping that by now you’re at least intrigued enough to try these wines!  You can check out the options at scoutandcellar.com/valgourlas.  Then let me know when you’re ready to place an order.  I can steer you toward the tastiest wines and the best deals, and I’ll want to explain shipping options for a fuss-free ordering experience. Just email me at cleanwinegal@gmail.com, or feel free to call or text me at 210-347-2810.

Alternately, you may want to jump right in and host a wine-tasting party.  I’ll bring the wines!  All you have to do is invite the people, provide some cheese and crackers, and open your home or business. I’ll do the rest.  And I’ll bring you a bottle of clean-crafted wine as a gift!  If that’s right up your alley, please reach out soon.  I’ve had so much interest in these wines that my fall schedule is filling up fast.

And, last but not least, if you find yourself saying, “Hmmmm!  I see why Val became a Scout & Cellar consultant, and I think I might like to take advantage of the same, ground-floor opportunity that she did!”, please reach out.  Let’s talk. I promise not to pressure you, and I’ll shoot straight about what it will take to reach your goals.  I’m looking for passionate wellness advocates to round out my team, and I LOVE sharing everything that I’m learning about wine and about Scout & Cellar, so let’s make it a conversation.

I hope to hear from you soon!  Until then, Cheers!!!
